Catastrophic Flooding
On May 5, 2023, flash floods swept through South Kivu, killing hundreds and destroying homes and farmland across communities served by three coffee cooperatives On the Ground works with.

The floods hit members of the KACCECO, Muungano, and Sopacdi cooperatives. On the Ground moved a $25,000 emergency response through those cooperatives, whose staff were already on the ground and able to identify the households in greatest need.
More than 200 children orphaned by the floods were supported through a summer program that provided meals, clothing, school uniforms, and access to mental health support — the difference between a lost year and a return to the classroom.
Because On the Ground works through long-standing cooperative partners rather than parachuting in, it is frequently among the first organizations able to respond when disasters strike these communities.
